My Top 10 Takeaways from The 3% Conference

Just 4 days after attending Get Money, Get Paid, I headed to The 3% Conference. The inclusive energy was noticeable from the start, as attendees and speakers created and held a safe space for individuality and vulnerability.

Before starting into my top 10 takeaways, I want to separately call out the most impactful learning (for me) from the conference (so, I guess, I have 11 takeaways!):

Public speaking and raw emotion can go hand-in-hand.

I personally counted 4 speakers who teared up and, as someone who is often overcome with emotion, it was truly inspiring to know that you can shed a tear in front of hundreds of people and still be a successful entrepreneur/CEO/public speaker. 🦸🏻‍♀️

And now for the rest of my list…

Like many conferences, there were multiple sessions that I did not get to attend and, of course, a multitude of different learnings. For the purpose of this article I’ve capture My Top 10 Takeaways in the form of quotes and stats, with the hope that it sparks your interest to hear more from The 3% Movement. And, because of this, I apologize that the following list is not inclusive of all learnings from the conference!

My Top 10 Takeaways from The 3% Conference:

  1. “Women don’t need sh!t, but to get out of (our) way.” --Wade Davis. You can’t “empower” women. Women already have power. Just stop limiting us or preventing us from fully reaching our true potential and expressing our power in full.

  2. There are more men named James as CEOs in Fortune500 companies than there are of women? WHAT????!!!! 😯

  3. “Be the person you needed when you were younger.” (Once again, my notes failed me and I don’t have everyone’s names recorded next to quotes.)

  4. “Failure is a beautiful growth mechanism.” --Denise Hewett.

  5. “Lead with a Human focus”

  6. Psychological safety is at the top of “The five keys to a successful Google team”.

  7. “It’s legal to discriminate against size in 49 states.” --Makeda Loney. Again, WHAT???!!! 😢; “This isn’t a minority group, this is a majority group.” --Louise Green

  8. “Anyone can ‘do diversity’ and hit quotas, but the problem is retaining diverse employees. And you have to change the policy to do that.” --Andrea Diquez. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, we work on or we send out into the world needs to be inclusive and diverse. Policies, benefits, websites, apps,…everything.

  9. “Yes to special treatment, no to reduced ambition.” --Chris Bergeron

  10. “Change can be destabilizing, but push through with conviction.” --Derek Robson
